Changes in United States Visa Processing – Interview Waiver Scheduling

Starting September 1, 2019, the U.S. Mission in India will begin mandatory interview waiver scheduling.  This procedure aims to reduce turnaround times for visa renewals and improve customer service for visa applicants across Mission India.  Starting September 1, eligible applicants must schedule an appointment date in order to drop off their passport and visa application materials at one of our eleven locations.  A visa application center employee will review the document checklist before accepting the application for delivery to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.  Applicants will receive a decision on their case within seven to ten business days of submission.

This procedure applies to individuals renewing their U.S. visas (subject to certain conditions) and to applicants under age 14 or over age 79.

Please note that, although applying for an interview waiver, there are cases in which an applicant must appear for an interview.  If the applicant is required to come in for an interview, he or she must travel to the post selected for interview waiver processing.  Once documents are submitted, it is not possible to transfer cases between posts.  Applicants who must appear for an interview will be notified on how to proceed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who qualifies to use interview waiver scheduling?

Visa applicants who are renewing their visas (subject to certain conditions) or who meet certain age requirements may schedule an interview waiver appointment.

  • How will I know whether I qualify for an interview waiver?

You may qualify for an interview waiver if you are under age 14 or over age 79.  In addition, individuals renewing their visa may be eligible to renew without an interview (subject to certain conditions).

  • What documents are required to drop off my application?

We require a valid passport, your current or most recent U.S. visa, one copy of the submission letter, one photograph taken within the last six months (conforming to Department of State guidelines), and any additional documentation required for your visa type.  In addition, applicants under age 14 must submit photocopies of their parents’ valid visas and passport bio pages.

  • I am in the United States (or another country).  May I send my passport and documents via international courier service to renew my visa?
  1. Applicants must be physically present in India in order to apply for a visa from a U.S. Consulate or Embassy in India.  You can, however, schedule your interview waiver drop-off ahead of time for when you will be back in India.  For H-1B and L applicants, this will enable you to start your visa renewal process as soon as you arrive in India.
  • How will my passport get to the post that I have selected?

Applicants may use any of our eleven drop-off locations.  Those applying at the New Delhi Embassy should drop off at the New Delhi, Chandigarh, or Jalandhar processing centers.  Applicants for Mumbai may drop off at Mumbai, Pune, or Ahmedabad processing centers.  Applicants for Chennai may drop off at Chennai, Bangalore, or Kochi.  Applicants in Hyderabad and Kolkata should drop off at their respective visa application centers.

  • If I qualify for an interview waiver, is it guaranteed that I will not have to appear for an interview?
  1. In certain cases, an applicant still may need to appear for an interview.  In that case, you will receive instructions about how to come in for your required interview.
  2. You must appear for your interview at the post that you selected for interview waiver processing.  It is not possible to transfer the case between posts.  Please consider this when selecting the post for your interview waiver case, as you may be called to appear for an interview.
  • If I’m called for an interview, can I change my post?
  • What if I don’t have all the required documents?

A visa application center employee will review your application package to make sure you have submitted all required documents for your visa class.  If any documents are missing, you will be asked to provide them that same day.  If you do not provide all the required documentation, you might not qualify for interview waiver.

  • What if I miss my scheduled drop-off date?

If you miss your drop-off date, you can reschedule.  In 24 hours, your receipt will be marked as “unused.”  At that time, you will be able to select a new drop-off date and print a new drop-off letter.

  • Can someone else – a friend or a travel agent – drop off my passport for me?
  1. You can designate a person to drop off your interview waiver submission on your behalf.  Be sure to provide them with all the necessary materials for your application.  Your submission letter has a checklist.
  • How will I know if I need to come in for an interview?

Applicants who are required to appear for an interview will be notified by phone or email, or via the visa application center.  At that time, they will receive instructions about how to appear for their appointment.

  • There are no drop off dates before my intended travel – what can I do?

You may wish to consider scheduling an interview.  Interview waiver appointments, while convenient, are not an expedited processing option.

  • I have selected the wrong drop-off location.  What should I do?

You can reschedule your drop-off at another post.  Please go to the website to reschedule your drop-off appointment.

  • How do I get my passport back?

If your application is approved, your passport and visa will be delivered for pickup to the selected Document Collection center that you specified when you scheduled your interview.  Details on passport delivery are available on this webpage.
